Wedding Cakes: Then and Now!

Picture it, Kansas City, 1993 a black stretch town car limousine and floral prints everywhere.  I remember being apart of my uncles wedding as a flower girl along with my sisters.  When we were younger we were flower girls in SO many weddings. I mean who wouldn’t want three cute little identical girls apart of their special day? So besides the cuteness provided on that day I think another key component is the cake!

While most guest were beaming over capturing the moment of my aunt and uncle cutting the cake I remember thinking “hurry and cut the cake, I’m ready for my slice.” Don’t judge me. I mean everybody remembers back in the day when wedding cakes were frosted with white icing all over and a secondary color of choice. It was typically standard for there to be at least to or three tiers separated by columns with the bride and groom placed on top.

Oh my, how the times have changed. Wedding cake toppers have even evolved from being just two people on the top of the cake celebrating a union to a comic relief or just a classic monogram.

Continuing to break outside of the norm a lot of couples are choosing to offer different options to their guest. Though I enjoy cake, I realize that there are people who do not share my same passion for this delicacy and that’s ok! Just because there is a wedding there does not always have to be cake. Here are some trends that I absolutely adore and if I had to cheat on cake it would be with the following.

  • One new trend includes donuts. Yep, you read that correctly, DONUTS!Who doesn’t love a good glazed donut. Donuts are not just for law enforcement anymore. Your guest will love this trend too!
  • Did somebody say Macaron? This small delicacy originates from Italy and goes perfect with wedding decor.
  • Yum! Pies are no longer reserved just for the desert table at family reunion. Pies are now offered as an alternative to the cake.
  • And of course the cupcake!! I like to think of them as the portable alternative to the cake. Cupcakes arranged and adorned with precision to flow with the decor is pure genius if you ask me.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to satisfying your sweet tooth on your BIG day so let your creativity flow!   Cant wait to see to the new “sweet” trends for 2017!
