As every bride or future-bride knows, choosing the right dress is one of the most important decisions of the wedding-planning process. Experts say it is best to have some idea of what you want before you hit the stores. At the same time, don’t be afraid to try on a wide range of styles, because you never know what you might find!

A-Line/Princess

This style is fitted in the bodice, while the skirt flows down to the ground in a shape that resembles the letter “A,” hence the name. Flattering on all body-types, the A-line or princess dress slims the waist, enhances the bust, and is one of the most popular choices for brides today. With different fabrics the look could range from soft and flowy to crisp and elegant. Or choose a knee-length skirt for a fun retro look.

Empire

With a waistline just below the bust, an empire bridal gown would make any Jane Austen heroine proud! As it has such a high waist, this dress will provide a lengthening effect – a great way to make short brides look taller. The unstructured skirt is also convenient for hiding any problem areas on your tummy. However, the high waist will also emphasize the bust, often making it appear bigger, so bustier ladies might want to avoid the empire style altogether. Still, it’s a versatile design and can incorporate many different sleeve lengths and neckline options.

Column

This simple style flows straight all the way to the hem, usually falling just above the floor, but can be shorter for more casual weddings. While the column dress is typically better fitted to slender brides, it is equally flattering for taller ladies as well as those who are more petite. Heavier fabrics will make the dress seem more formal, while lighter fabrics create a delicate, ethereal look. Either way, this is a great style for adding embellishments like beads, sequins, lace, and ribbons.

Ball Gown

One of the more romantic wedding dress styles, the ball gown design includes a fitted bodice attached to a full skirt. But, be aware that this style has the potential to make some full-figured brides look larger. On the other hand, very petite brides can disappear in such a dress. In which case, the A-line style might be a better option for both body types. Still, the ball gown will be perfect for some brides, as it can give the impression of an hourglass figure, bringing attention to your waist and hiding your lower body. Just keep in mind that these dresses are more appropriate for larger, more formal ceremonies. So, if a fairy tale wedding is what you have in mind, a ball gown might just be the best choice!

Mermaid/Trumpet

The mermaid or trumpet design is often cited as the sexiest of wedding dress styles. This dress hugs the body down to the thigh or knee, and from there, flows out to the floor. As it is so tight fitting, the mermaid dress is sometimes considered best worn by slender brides. But if you love your curves and want to show them off, this could be the dress for you!

Regardless of body type, the most important thing is that you’re comfortable in your own skin.
